Species Overview
Wild Boars are Hong Kong's largest terrestrial mammal. They can grow up to sizes of two meters long and can weigh anywhere between 70 and 270 kilograms. The "Eurasian Wild Pig", that can be regularly encountered in a variety of regions of Hong Kong. Its evolutionary origins reside in the islands of South East Asia, with the species found in Hong Kong likely a variation from species residing in the mainland. In many instances worldwide the wild boar is often viewed as an invasive species, due to it's impressive ability to grow it's population, being highly adaptable to a variety of environments. With no abundant natural predator in Hong Kong, apart from the occasional python, this issue of spiralling wild boar populations has been a persistent issue in the city.

Wild Boars in Hong Kong are wide ranging, occupying a diverse range of habitats, consistent with their impressive adaptability. The Hong Kong Biodiversity Information Hub's (HKBIH), Biodiversity Graphic Information System illustrates their diverse spread, using records of occurrence, since 2020.

Do not approach or attempt to feed wild boars, as this can habituate them to potentially harmful interactions.

Avoid cornering or blocking the path of wild boars, as it could trigger a defensive behaviour by perceiving a potential threat.

Do not attempt to provoke or harass wild boars.

Refrain from leaving out food or garbage that could attract wild boars to residential areas.

Do not attempt to capture or domesticate wild boars, as they are wild animals, consistent with the Wild Animals Protection Ordinance, and should be recognised as such.
Challenges
The relevant Wild Animals Protection Ordinance introduced in 2024, and the associated amendments that come with it are also relevant to the feeding of wild boars, categorised as wild animals, with similarly increased penalties. At Encountering Wildlife HK, we acknowledge that addressing the issue of feeding wildlife is multifaceted, as individuals may have varying reasons for engaging with wildlife in this way. However, our focus is on ensuring that comprehensive information is readily available and accessible. Wild Boars are widely known to regularly encounter accessible to individuals who are likely to encounter animals, such as wild boars, in Hong Kong. We aim to highlight alternative, less harmful methods for experiencing wildlife that can still provide enriching outdoor experiences.
